A friend of mine showed me this piece of metal he found during metal detecting.
Does anyone of you know what it is?
It looks like it has a safety pin inside.

Not entirely sure what it is, but it's definitely not something I'd feel safe handling!

What are the dimensions? What I think you may have there is a very early (19th century) hand grenade.
Well, too big to be a hand grenade. In what general region was this object recovered? And was it near the sea or inland?
Indeed, altough the safety pin makes it looks like some kind of ordnance.
It was found in Dussen, the Netherlands.
At the end of 1944 this area became a front sector in the Southern Netherlands and thus Allied and Germans were bombarding each other with artillery.
This village was heavily bombarded.
Maybe it could also be some kind of part from a vehicle?
A wheel from a (tracked?) vehicle was found too.
The wheel that was found
Looks like the ornamental top to a gatepost, or similar.
