I would just figure out roughly how thick of a piece of foam you need, cut to size, insert into back of display case, on top of what is there.
Then find some black, or red, or whatever color...

Apply another layer of foam to fill the space,...
Apply another layer of foam to fill the space, (possibly another layer of backing material), and use the pressure against the glass to hold them in place.
