    Default S/N 38 Spanish Standard-Modell 84/98?

I wasn't sure if I should've posted this bayonet in the 'Bayonets and trench knives of the world' forum or this sub-forum but considering its an 84/98 which I dont know much about I figured I'd post it here.

I have had this 84/98 bayonet for about 5 years. I bought it for about 50$ off ebay If i can recall from a seller who only had pictures of the bayonet in its scabbard (Which is a German scabbard) so when i bought it I thought it could've been a 'sneak' bayonet mismatch and if it wasnt it was only 50$.

When I got it I was surprised to have received what I believe is an Spanish Standard-Modell bayonet with the serial number '38' and the scabbard probably being from a Spanish contract German Export bayonet as it has no waffenamt. I dont know much on these Spanish Standard Modell bayonets so any information or comments are greatly appreciated.

I will be using my 1940 Horster bayonet as a comparison in some of the pictures.

    Grips are stamped 38 aswell.

Stamping on the scabbard is rather weak. I believe it is 1937 dated with S/N 8092 made by Coppel Gmbh.

    Hello,

this is the so-called Model 43 from Spain. This was a fairly simple copy of the Export S84/98. The blade was only riveted to the cast handle.

So I take it the Serial Number is indeed number 38? Seems unusual to find one so low.
It goes rather well with my Spanish M26 Adrian in any case!

They turn up from time to time, often advertised as being "German", but the most obvious visual difference to the S84/98 is the narrower blade on the Spanish bayonet.

M43 was made after dress KS98 bayonets, the scabbard is german made by Coppel GmbH in 1937 under code S/173.

    Just some additional notes.

It seems most of the other Spanish Standard-Modell bayonets i've seen are marked with ''P.R.8'' on the crosspiece. With the absence of 'P.R.8' stamp and the serial number 38 this is presumably an early produced bayonet that wasn't refurbished/marked 'P.R.8'.
The scabbard is possibly just reused commercial stock from the Civil war to fit some of these early Spanish Standard-Modell's
(Assuming the scabbard is original to the bayonet).
From what I can gather the P.R.8 is a refurbish stamp which stands for (Para Refarmado Numero 8) or 'For (Rifle) Refurbished Number 8', Which is known as the Spanish FR-8.

The way the blade is fitted on my Spanish Standard-Modell is at an upward angle where l'd 'almost' be worried to shoot a rifle with it attached, it also looks as if someone has rounded the tip via digging or grinding, the steel, construction, & finish of these bayonets are obviously of poorer quality than even some of the late war 84/98 bayonets I've seen.

for PR8 are various explanation but i dont believe its for FR8 as they used Cetme bayonets it was reworked from older rifles but have different system, here is no rework on the 38 piece probably, that is the explanation why is there no PR8. The scabbard is question is period replacement, could be mixed in time by collector, question is where it was found the complet. When in Spain it could be so mixed anyway when in USA is hard to believe they are from same delivery.

Although the thread starter bayonet is not one of them, there are TR era German made export model bayonets with some of them having the "P.R.8." markings, and many times having signs of reworking. The factory OEM types (pictured) having a bright-polished steel blade/hilt and a strong blued type of finish scabbard. No flashguard, and underneath the wood grips a Waffenamt that is oftentimes mostly and/or partially erased. Best Regards, Fred
