Beginning collector

I am just getting into collecting WW II original items and could really use some sound advice. From what I have read, it's bad for the community when people start buying bad items because they didn't do the necessary research and the last thing I want to do is contribute to the proliferation of fake items. So here I am, be nice, you were new once too. Thanks
