Hello. I recently bought a visor from Ebay, and while it hasn't arrived yet, I'm anxious about it's authenticity (since I'm completely new to the world of collecting).
Here are photos from the Ebay listing (not all, only those which I think would be most important). The seller seems very much trustworthy, but I know fakes can even fall into knowing hands.

Welcome to the world of collecting NVA stuff

This is a visor from 1986 (indicated by the P on the plastic label) , but in not very good condition. It seems to be unworn though. It is an officer's hat, for 'NVA Landstreitkräfte'.

    What stands out :
The hat is rather new, yet it looks old, probably due to storage.
The piping looks very old, the white has darkened quite a bit.
The emblem at the front lacks colours, this is not unusual for a worn hat, but it should not be like that when it is unworn. See pictures of a new emblem below.

But what really stands out is the strange lock to the cord on one side, this is definitely not original. It looks like someone tampered with it to , why, I do not know (one end of the cord maybe ripped lose). Those cards are cheap and easy to attach so why would you try to fix it like that ? An officer would also never have worn it like that.
    The cord seems authentic, otherwise.

Summary: You got an authentic hat, but in not very good condition. I would fix the cord and the emblem, which would restore the hat to its original state.
Or if you are a purist, keep it for spare parts and get a better one
Hope you did not spent too much on it.

PM me , I can send you some more info and links connected to collecting NVA which will help you, if you are interested.

Thank you so much for your input! I don't think I'll try and make any repairs since I don't want to risk accidentally damaging something. I'm also glad to hear the hat is authentic, even if it isn't in the best condition. I didn't pay a lot I don't think, as the hat was only about 35 dollars (maybe that is a lot for a hat in poorer condition, I wouldn't know!).
Regardless, thank you for your response!
