What do you mean by "Hammerhead" ? It's concerning the eagle's head ?
I have also the impression that this buckle was painted during or after the war. Maybe I should clean it.

Yes the Hammerhead SS buckle is a early unmarked nickelsilver buckle with two variants described by JP Redeuilh, the first variant with C type catch is a scarce buckle but your buckle is the rare variant (catch with feets)

No these were silver in colour, that's from being in ground and made from nickel
