Battle damaged SS Single decal M40 from Normandy

Hi Guys, I have had this helmet in my collection for some years now. It was brought home by a British soldier. He took it from a young Waffen SS man who was KIA. He though he had been killed by a mortar barrage. He might have been in either the LAH or Hitler Jugend divisions.

Note the impact damage at the rear of the helmet.

The helmet is interesting, not only for the story, but for the fact that the liner is padded out with two newspapers, the “Algemeiner Anzeiger” Sadly, the liner is decaying from red rot. This is not treatable. The newspaper are consecutively dated Marz 21st & 22nd 1944. I had the helmet a long time before I dared to look for the dates on them for fear of the liner failing apart any more.

Again, an item that brings home the reality of war.

Hi Adrian , that is one awesome helmet , it has everything i like in a german lid. Salty character , history , a bit of battle field damage , SS, 10 out a 10 for me , cheers Raymond
