I would like to ask your opinion about this helmet. I am not a specialist, so I checked only the common things:
the leftovers of decal have a bright metal shine in some parts, you can't feel the border of decal with the finger, I can not see any traces of decal removal on the other side of helmet. Decal, as you can see, almost gone, but residual black border in the left corner doesn't show any zigzags. Lot number looks like 1514 to me, but honestly, its barely visible. I know, that where are only few known SS SD for EF M40, please correct me if I am mistaken, so this says against of originality. Also where are some traces of the white/yellowish paint on some parts and the dark spot, which looks like the machine oil. Condition is matching with the barn find, as seller told me.
I think the lack of replies is an answer to your question. There is just nothing left to make an assessment on.
Yes, you are right, looks like we can only speculate
Coming back to lot numbers, knowing that there are only SD helmets close to this one, could it be some other decal but SS on the right side? I was thinking of factory guard, but could't find any similar borders/background decals.
I see at least two or three "decal" that were on this helmet in different positions.
Yes, I also noticed something like shadow to the left already after posting photos, it is not so visible in real life. These "black" dashes at the left are, in fact, bare metal of scratches.
I still think I see a shadow of a second decal and not bear metal. But you can see better in hand.
Thank you, you are right, there is definitely something. By “dashes” I meant these lines crossing the “shadow”. This is how it looks from left. But again, this shadow decal (if it existed) was applied on the right side, which doesn’t explain what else could it be
