I was just going through a bag of old bits and pieces and came across this skull that I had always figured was a reproduction. Not being particularly focused on insignia perhaps others more expert in these matters than I might confirm my negative opinion of this badge.

The cast copies have pitting from the process of same and also tend to be heavier, at least in my imperfect experience of these wretched little things. The authentic badges are quite light, really. This is an unscientific generalization. Now there is some chap who has done a chemical and physical analysis of cap badges, that is, to assay the constituent elements of same. High tech for the regalia and cap badge enthusiast. Ohne mich.

One needs a lot of comparative examination of the real objects and the fake pieces as done by Mr. Bwanek and some others here.

Also, one needs better eye sight than had by me, surely. Also, I am not about to pry these real objects off of authentic caps in my possession for the lark of seeing the marks on the back pi pa po.

Happy Blech to all. Blech= tin auf Deutsch.
