It is at all levels really which is why I asked the question at the top of the thread whether any documentation exists to help validate this practice. Just as the SS Dr. in his letters which enlightened us all to the not so efficient delivery service of the SS Kliederkasse...

Mollo also makes this point in his books that the quartermaster system originally designed to support the pre-war SS was overwhelmed by wartime and the expansion of the end strength by many times. The black cap is listed in the late 1940 catalog of the Kleiderkasse SS, but who knows what effect the war had on this item a year later. I am sure there are primary sources. In you tube there is a sequence in the Deutsche Wochenschau of the Germans emptying out the clothing warehouses of the French army to ship clothing to the Reich. I am sure this was a generalized practice, but who knows how easy it was to order one of these caps in wartime for the handful of those who nonetheless got promoted. I am sure one of you reading this can answer this question. We also are well aware that the enlisted/NCO caps existed in surplus, since so many of them survive in unissued state.

In any case, I can well understand that such a cap might have been re fitted, but each collector has to approach a piece of this kind via their own criteria, via their own parameters, and the price of the piece in question is pretty steep, really.

I cannot recall the title or locale of this diary of an SS doctor, but it is famous and often cited source.
I cannot recall either off the top of my head but it got my attention because it disscused the mundane yet fascinating every day details..

Prehaps it was a work of fiction? I don't know...

No, it is a real, historical account. A diary of an SS doctor of some kind. There were many, as you know.

thank you so much, indeed, to which were, in turn, added allowance of various kinds, especially for those in combat, with children, and on and on...to include the one time clothing allowance as well as the maintenance clothing allowance via the Kleiderkasse SS.

The irritating thing about my SS administrative handbook is that the Bekleidungswirtschaft part was never issued or removed, as it appears or is cited in the next year's edition ('43). However, reference is made to same throughout the existing pieces of the work I own ('42). There was a whole regulation on the pay structure of the Wehrmacht in wartime, to include additional pay for service in combat zones etc, which is incredibly complicated. However, since I am not unfamiliar with not unlike pay systems in the present and recent past, such things interest me.
An Allgemeine SS person would have not been entitled to the extra allowances due to those in combat and I am not sure they received a salary at all, if they were part timers.

    Default Allgemeine-SS pay

This document may be of interest as it not only shows the the pay being offered for an Allgemeine-SS member but the allowance for children.

Thank you very much. This document describes, then, the pay for those in the full time billets (hauptamtlich) of the Standarte admin staff. A revealing and interesting addition to your wonderful sources in their number. Thank you. Notice as well the generous support to families with many children, as in national socialist.

Imagine what they would think of the difference in pay scales in a corporation today!

thinking about what it was like here in the states, during WWII...... germany must have been ten fold worse, even in the early days.

    very interesting read.

    Thanks!

We have lived in a different world of prosperity, which, however, may be careening back towards an earlier, unhappier and poorer world, at least for some of us reading this. Nor was the plumbing very good, then, either.....
In any case, I can well understand why one might have had their cap re fitted and spared the expense of a new one at some point, especially in war time. However, my job is other than the defense of high end dealers, in fact.
