I bought this helmet from the states, and need to double check its authenticity (originality) incase it needs returning. any info at all would be good.

I would be astonished if you would be allowed to return it after the above statement...The liner bolts arn't in properly because i took it apart, but they were rusted in.

Mate, as a fellow Australian, I really hope your having a lend here
If you have just obtained this from someone else and are wondering if its a good one (no it's not) why in heavens name did you pull it apart, then ask questions on a forum?
It would appear as though you would be now stuck with it
If you are considering buying helmets etc. then please post some pictures before you buy, also some good reference books would be worth their weight in gold
I wouldn't ask about the flag in the background if I were you

Firstly , if you have tampered with it in any way once you received it, the you own it, plain and simple. secondly ......... a camo M42 SS? come on
Better pictures of the decal would be handy, but from my tired old eyes, it looks to be a model making trick and it's had a wash put over it to disguise.
Personally, if its real I for one would be happy for you, unless you paid in excess of $10k then it's suspect sorry
From these pics i dont like the paint decal or liner but as others have said after you have now tampered with it you are going to have a job returning it, rgds Dave
Not good i'm afraid , the decal is not original , nor is the paintwork

But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader
