Looks like an SS shield that hung on a main gate at an SS Kaserne. What are the dimensions?

Just a comment, it looks like a skull on the shield, most likely a coincidence, maybe it's cursed, JMO

Interesting discussion but I would point out any sheet metal worker could reproduce it, and a few years outside would give some patina. The example in the book photo looks better made.

There are a lot of straight line looks to be grind marks on the surface. If it was buried under a stone foundation or a chimney fire box in it's foundation, it looks like something ground the marks into the metal surface. You'd need a known original to compare the measurements but it sure looks like the metal work is the same in the image seen in the book. Hard to tell without an original resting side by side to the one of the threads subject scroll. I just spotted the runes are narrower in the one this thread is opened with.

There are originals, and there are copies of this shield.
The one that started this thread does not look like an original.
The runes are narrower, as Rich mentioned, and they are not aligned with each other, as well as being roughly cut out.
