Re: Is this an SS greatcoat?
I would say near to impossible to be 100% sure without an hand on inspection.
You have to check how the boards are sewn into the sleeves to discovery if they are post war added.
These are Heer coat used also by the SS .
Just my opinion.

If it helps...
But I know what you mean. It looks pretty good to me, in hindsight, but I understand it's a tricky business. I've requested more pictures.

Re: Is this an SS greatcoat?
Hmm - I saw similar examples on the net like this : Axis History Factbook: Waffen-SS SS-Oberscharführer's Great Coat (Artillery) and it looked like my one was fairly legitimate. It looks okay to me?

Re: Is this an SS greatcoat?
No sleeve eagle which is a massive concern.

Re: Is this an SS greatcoat?
Hi Robbie, as Francesco has correctly pointed out, the Waffen SS wore a Heer pattern greatcoat.
It is very easy to take an original Heer Officers greatcoat and convert it into an "SS" one. The old fighters chevron and the shoulder staps are the lower priced items of insignia that are in place here. A set of collar tabs and a sleeve eagle would be expensive to add (or replace if this is an original.)
The basic greatcoat is original. The question mark here is the insignia and when it was added. In hand is needed I think, like Francesco has said.
Cheers, Ade.
