Der Spiss is not a rank, and can be added to the NCO's level soldiers

more often than not the highest
Gentlemen, in the Wehrmacht, the position (it is not a rank) of 'Speiss' in the unit was the most senior NCO of the unit, and was the link between the commanding officer and the men of that unit. 'Speiss' literally means 'Spear' indicating the business end of the said unit. The rings were worn whilst performing this duty, and had to be removed when the job was relinquished. In the Imperial army it appeared to be a rank, the highest NCO corresponding to the rank of Regimental Sgt Major in the British Army was ' Etatmassige Feldwebel ', familliarly known as 'Der Speiss'.
