Battle Damaged M16 G62 Camo Helmet

An M16 G62 made by Gebrueder Gnuchtel A.G., Lauter i./Sa., the helmet retains all three leather liner pads with two retaining their horse hair filling. The camo is rendered in a bright yellow ochre, green and dark brown, separated by regulation black dividing lines. Interestingly, there appears to be an upside down A or a V painted on the front of the dome and a tigers tail design to the top of the dome. There is a name written in pencil in the rear skirt and looks to have been one on the front pad but both are hard to make out.

The helmet received two bullet strikes to the left side, one of which has passed through of of the the liner pads, while another appears to have directly struck the chinstrap lug and taken it with it as well as a large piece of shell as it exited the other side. The chinstrap hardware remains, but is bent and twisted. This example remains a stark reminder of the horrors of war and the infallibility of the steel helmet when subjected to the firepower modern warfare.

Very nice looking helmet, perhaps the battle damage, tells a gruesome tale.

I feel sorry for the original owner who was unfortunate to have two of the enemy shoot him, assuming they were rifle hits. Original patina and interesting personal touches with the artwork.

A few more photos. Note the finger print (the light finger shaped section near the skirt) in the last photo, and to the right of the black dividing line and field grey patch showing through.

could of been possibly used as a decoy helmet put on a stick to possibly locate the position of a sniper.

Thanks Paul! Yes, it must have been well stored all this years. Wish I knew where it has been.
