Questions on M16 Helmet

Hello, I have been considering purchasing this helmet but would appreciate some info. From what i've researched i'm thinking it's a German M16 helmet. What i don't understand is why it is black and what the value would be if it has been painted. Inside it is stamped NJ62. Any help would be appreciated.

The only discernible difference between a M16 and M17 is the presence or not of a aluminium liner....so to the best of my knowledge this could be either and without a liner it would not be possible to tell

fire service use? post war repaint certainly will change value. $100 or so IMO.

That's a good point, lots of these types were used by fire services after the war, generally repainted black....
100 bucks for this lid, repainted and no liner would be as much as I would pay.....
