Pleased to say that yesterday this resource book was delivered - 'Germany's Combat Helmets 1933-1945' by Ken Niewiarowicz.
It was Michael he told me that a good resource book was invaluable (although for Kriegsmarine medals, which I still intend to get some time).
I found this book online as 'used' for £125 - it clearly has hardly been read though and is in great condition. I thought the price was reasonable so went for it. It's supposed to be one of the better books.

I've not had a chance to read it in any detail yet - it doesn't seem to have lot numbers, but germanhelmetvault.com site has this - thanks Frank

I want to be able to gain knowledge and contribute more to the forum, and also one day would like a good SS, Kriegsmarine and police helmet - this book can only help me in my quest.

Mike gave you great advice. This book is a must for new collectors, and an invaluable reference for all of us. I have been collecting since 1960 and still look at it a couple of times a week! It will pay for itself in no time by helping you avoid the many clunkers on the market. Enjoy. Jim G.

I am not a helmet specialist but I am interested and have a few so I have this excellent book and Ludwig Bauer's "The History of the German Steel Helmet" which contains technical specifications not in Ken's book. The two compliment each other and I certainly have seen no other books that come near this pair.

Jim is a specialist and knows his subject. If he still reads his books that says enough for me!

Good reference books are worth their weight in gold and not only do they help avoid costly errors but they are immensley enjoyable to pore over whilst in "hobby mode".

Know the references as well as you know your artifacts and you will not go far wrong. There are experts out there (Panzerkampfabzeichen - Philippe de Bock, Nahkampfspange - Thomas Durante, EKI - Frank Thater, Flakkampfabzeichen - Marc Garlasco to mention a few).

Whatever you have in your display cabinet make sure you have a bookshelf to match. Study it then collect it

Best & only reference book worth having on helmets. I too refer to it often after 8 years of owning it.

Worth whatever you paid for it

Glad you like it. Use it often and you will get a lot of out of it. I have read through it twice at least and keep this within arms reach of my PC.

Next to consider is Ken's follow on book regarding helmet decals!!
"Please", Thank You" and proper manners appreciated

Thanks for the replies - I took a look at The Helmet Decals of The Third Reich Ken Niewiarowicz - this definitely looks to be something i'll be getting as well at some point.
Like everyone says, I expect the books will pay for themselves in the end..

This was the cheapest I could find it. a 'new' copy is £267, although the copy I have is as good as new fortunately.
You'd think Ken would want to print some more via his publishers if the demand is there?
It doesn't look like they're much cheaper in the USA either.
