i was a little concerned with the liner because it looks like a steel liner with pre 1940 paint and decals, but i just read in ken n's book that there was a substantial number of double decal Austrian helmets with 1940 dated liner frames.
siezed Austrian stocks and refurbished just before the adoption of 1940 specs
i suppose the next question is the liner 1940.

I also think the helmet has a shot....for the sake of comparison, I'm going to add some pics here of my DD tranny. The tri-colour has been scratched off (as per period regs) but you'll notice the adler decal is the same type - often found on these types of helmets.
Hopefully this comparison will help. Good luck.

Hi, thanks Rob for posting the photos of your Transitional for comparison, certainly the adler's are most similar. It's fascinating to read the differing views re it's authenticity by the members, quite a mixed reaction. I was offered this helmet by a private seller interstate and bought it on the basis of the photos. What I really liked was it's early all brown chinstrap which has a tear midway. Any advice as to how to best join the two pieces of the long chinstrap together would be appreciated.

Not quite sure how to help with the chinstrap Brad. I'm sure there must be some kind of glue out there for leather? That said: some collectors would just leave it alone and consider it a casualty of time.
    Good luck!

To bring an old thread back to life, the holes on this one I am sure are from it's service as a Czech Vz20 helmet between the wars. The Czechs received Austrian M17 helmets, and had a comb installed on the top. When it came to be reissued to the Wehrmacht these combs were removed and the holes welded up.

I like the original posted helmet as well as Robs BGB.

My avatar is a BGB turtle shell camo with a ersatz oil skin liner.
