luftwaffe helmet...questions

Article about: by Pablo Yet the helmet survived. The owner told me it was a vet bring-back from his Uncle (But aren't they all vet bring-backs). This one it seems was probably the real vet bring back deal

    Default luftwaffe helmet...questions

I just received this helmet in the mail today and am curious as to your thoughts. It looks like the color of a heer helmet. So, is this a former lufty that has reissued as a heer? Parts of the paint looks kind of drippy. Is this of concern? Does the decal look ok? The liner and chinstrap is oily and looks like one of those bog people from England. Is there any way to extract the oil out and make the leather more normal looking? Thanks.

More likely to be a repaint for luftw feld division, paintwork looks period done but very hard to tell from pics provided.

Sorry but do not know how to de oil the leather, perhaps, it would be better left alone.

Very nice field camo Pablo! I think the paint is 100% right. I also would leave the leather alone. Nice lid. Jim G.

Im not sure about the liner, theres no wear around the edges that i can see apart from a tear, the "oil" could be mink or neatsfoot which either way wont help the liner, you could try putting paper kitchen towels against the tongues and the interior and hope that it will draw out some of the oil, but you will need to do this many times

The chinstrap is also oily. Would it hurt the paint if I placed it over the visor of the helmet?

Could very well leave a stain, but it may also wipe off easily.

It's a shame that people ruin things by trying to correct them - the liner
and chinstrap were probably just fine before that lousy coating
was applied. Looks like it was smeared all over the
    drawstring as well.........

A nice period helmet on which someone in error applied leather preservative. There is no way to extract the oil from the leather so leave it alone.

Great helmet, one that should be in a textbook.
