M40 Full Basket Wire/Camo Helmet - Q66 - Lot # DN255
Wires are minefields I know. I have had this one for over 20 years. The prior owner, a friend of mine, bought it at the Stratford Gun Show in the early 80's. This one has remnants of chunky green camo paint that apparently was applied before the wire. Most of the exterior paint has worn off over the years. There are no traces of a decal remaining, but on the interior of the dome the factory applied green Heer paint remains. Complete with a size 59 liner and a shortened chinstrap. There is some of the camo paint on the edge of the leather and on the liner band. Not the prettiest wire out there, but in my opinion a real one. Hope you like it. Jim G.
Hi all, I just checked the "lot number data base" on GHW. The only M40 Q66 with lot number DN255 is listed as an SS helmet! Who knows? Maybe it was a camo SS! One can only speculate - and wish! Best regards, Jim G.
According to another source of lot numbers, as Helmet 2id said, it is listed as an SD SS. Also an SD Heer as well though. Either way its a cracking hat!
Hi Jim, I am not keen on the shade of the remaining green paint, but that said the wire looks spot on for me, so as the paint is under the wire it has to be good! Maybe the original owner just "mixed" a shade of his own or got hold of a random pot of paint from a shed! Nice helmet all in all, Leon.
