M40 SD Heer question

Hello,
I recently acquired this M40 SD Heer helmet for a very good price. I would like to know your opinions on the authenticity of the helmet. Marked SE64 with lot number 9625.
There is also a hole in the top of the helmet which seems to be relatively old. Anyone who knows what this might have been for? Maybe a grave helmet?
Bought the helmet without a liner. I have added a repro liner (still waiting on split pins and paint). Anyone got any tips on aging the leather?

Tipps to age the repro liner? Dont. Throw it away. It ads nothing to the helmet.

We are collectors here. The helmets we collect are never kitted out with fake parts. A real helmet is always better left as is.
