I have a few M42 shells from which I have removed the thin Czech paint.
I have one with that grey coat on the exterior only.
It is impervious to acetone and highly resistant to strong paint stripper.
I think the thread "Small size late war m42 helmet" on this forum shows the finish on the exterior before the grey was applied.(I'm sorry that's not a link,I forgot how on the forum but it should turn up on Google.)
As your shell is ex Czech the same as mine it is very likely bare metal on the inside,an uncommon post war coating on the outside and then a regular black paint finish for the complete helmet.
Thanks for showing your NS shell,it is the first time I've seen that grey finish outside my own example.
