One that I hadn’t looked at in a while, but decided to try photographing again as this one always been a bit of challenge to get right and the sun was out. A size 64 shell produced by ET and finished in Light blue factory paint with early straight leg droop tail eagle decal. Lot number 4082 with the darkened liner unit marked to Fl.gr.Gopp, which I have been advised relates the helmet to Airfield Göppingen (German: flugplatz Göppingen, also known as FliegerhorstGöppingen or Cooke Barracks) an airfield on the northern edge of Göppingen (Goeppingen), Germany. The chinstrap is maker marked to Franz Brehme Walsrode 1939.

It’s a bit of a vague and jumbled history, but in short:

    1./ & 2./Fliegergruppe Göppingen
    Renamed 1.(H)/ & 2.(H)/Aufklärungsgruppe 315 in February 1936.
    Renamed 1.(H)/ & 2.(H)/Aufklärungsgruppe 115 around 1 April 1936.
    Expanded to 1.(H)/ 2.(H)/ & 3.(H)/Aufklärungsgruppe 115, operating Heinkel 46s.
    Renamed Aufklärungsgruppe 15 on 1st November 1937.
Reformed as Aufklärungsgruppe 13 on 1st November 1938.
Finally becoming Aufklärungsgruppe 31 on 26th August 1939.

Operated as close-air reconnaissance for the Army, with He45, He46 and Henschel 126s, largely on the Eastern Front. It then gets a bit scrappy, with various Staffeln being renamed and assigned to several commands and temporary operations.

I’ll let you know if I can clarify anything.
Fantastic helmet, by the way, Andy!

That’s some great information Rob! Thanks for taking the time to have a look. Always gives an item a bit more meaning when you can tie it to a location.

I think I found a little more information about this particular airfield.
