Great looking Naval sword - as to the "N" and the number - the "N" would indicate "Nordsee" and the number is a property control number as these were issued by the units arms room. You will also find swords with an "O" and numbers this would be for the "Ostsee"(Baltic sea).

beutiful sword pegase001,is that a type of hinge on the crossguard and does it have a purpose, sorry for my ignorance dont know anything about swords
85 - the hindge as you call it locks the sword in place on the scabbard to keep it from sliding out and falling into the sea etc.
