Ok so with yhe help of a good friend and his friends found out this is a very rare jacket . around 2,000 of these were used to try out body armor. I believe it is called a Doran jacket . or armored utility jacket .Gary

So just get rid of the German patches and you should have a great looking example.
But make sure that he didn't enlist in the Foreign Legion's Devil Guard after a tour in the Corps!!!

No plates and the patches are coming off and maybe a very gentle cleaning .never heard of the devil brigade.Gary
Interesting, I would have thought for flotation bladders?
That would have been a good guess. When I get home from work the patches are coming off.
