Methinks its a french ww2 naval reefer. All the markings on the inside are smudged/faded to the point of barely noticing them. picked up at the local surplus store for $10, missing some buttons but its cool, i can find them

Well isn't the cross of Lorraine the Free French symbol? With the anchor, that would make the badge Gaullist navy.
Sorry, can't see the buttons, but the khaki wool looks quite like British Army fabric. That would be consistent with Free French origin.
Cheers,
Pat
the buttons have anchors on them, and that was my original rationale
looks like a british made free french badged deck coat
Any makers marks at the reverse of the buttons?

T.W.& W. Paris is Trelon, Weldon and Weil, who have been making "Paris-backs" since 1814.
Company is now owned by Coinderoux, Ivry.
Buttons on the coat may either have been taken from a French naval uniform (pre 1940) or may be post-Liberation.
Cheers,
Pat
