Looks like a nice uniform group. The unit was of course made up of coloured soliders. Nick named the Buffalo Division.
The other shoulder sleeve insignia is for North Africa HQ. This patch was introduced in 1943. Later moved to Italy and redesignated U.S. Army Forces in the Mediteranean Theater in 1944.
Looking at the ribbon bars: the Bronze Star and Purple Heart ribbons look newer than the other ribbons. Do you think these are a later addition?
Any name in the tunic? It would be interesting to research as were as most of the junior Officers were Black Afro-Americans (like the enlisted men) while the higher ranked Officers were, of course, white. Your Officer must have seen previous service with the divison before being moved to the HQ. Given his move to HQ, I suspect he might have been white?
Cheers, Ade.
i had to replace the bronze star and purple heart ribbons that were on the uniform with the ribbons still in the medal cases. i got some pics of the name in the trousers. i also found a wheat penny and an italian lira in the breast pocket.
Thanks for the extra info. I am sure he would make a good research project.
Cheers, Ade.
i just watched miracle at st Anne last night, that white company commander was a incompetent prick
This link will give you some ideas about research:
