Thanks to all for sharing. May I ask what the gold trim on some of the officer’s collartabs is for? Thanks again.
generally the golden piping indicates the rank of officer. the color of the collar tabs indicates the branch of the army. only political officers do not wear gold piping. in the NKVD there is a peculiarity. there are 4 main branches: state security, border guards, internal troops and gulag. state security does not use gold piping, on state security the raspberry piping is common to the troops and the officers. for the 3 others the golden piping is used. so in the previous message we are in the presence of an officer collar (golden piping) of the internal troops of the NKVD (the collar tabs is brick red - color of the NKVD). internal troops are responsible for many tasks: escorting prisoners, securing railways, strategic economic sites, maintaining order ...
Thank you very much for the detailed answer! I don't want to derail the thread, but would like to ask just one more question. Was the piping on gymnasterkas and breeches different for the different branches of the NKVD? Did they use cornflower blue, maroon or raspberry like on regular NKVD caps? Thanks.
