What are the opinions of this gold wound badge. It looks like it might maybe be a fake one? The plating looks very thick, and the details on it are not so crisp looking? I read they did make hollow back ones like this.

This is a 'tombak' version with the black coating/paint completely gone.
Although there has been speculation that very early badges
were hollow, I do not believe this is the case here.............

Hi, thanks guys, then it just plain brass color now, and the black paint was taken off. Ahhh I see, thanks. I will keep looking.
Yes, or never applied.
I have one as well with no trace of black.
I would not be surprised if these were actually used late war in place of 'gold' ones,
but I have no proof of this. It's just speculation on my part.
All the silver/zinc awards you see have the very light plating worn off - just like the WWII
zinc TR coins. I have two 'AU' pfenig specimens that still have some silver plating
on them, and I expect that they would not have put very much gold plating
on 'gold' badges anyhow, especially late in the war......
It is entirely possible, IMO.
