Looks like the magazines are far easier to access on the British pouches.
I wasn't aware we (Brits) had kit for M16 mags......FNs / SLR ????
‘Knew that...would we (they?) have had a specific webbing item??? I’d’ve thought those guys would’ve adopted Alice or other kit...but what do I know.....:-)
They tried the American pouches and didn't like them.

My greatest fear is that one day I will die and my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them

The US one is the M1956 universal ammo pouch that was originally designed for the M14 rifle mags, which it fits better. Later was used with the M16, though not designed for it. I understand the field technique to improve access to the M16 magazine was to stuff a bandage down the bottom to lift the mags for easy reach.
In Vietnam the NZ Army used a mixture of equipment, both the FN SLR and the M16 and likewise a mixture of pouches, from US M1956 web to British P1958 kit, as can be seen in this photo.
