Just In From Leipzig - Reichsmarine White Top Tellermutze
Thought I'd share what I think is a pretty rare cap, which I've just received from Leipzig Germany.
Unlike their Kriegsmarine Cousins, the removable top on a Reichsmarine sailors cap did not simply fit into a channel around the cap bad, instead they were fastened with split pins around the circumference of the cap band. Just like the Kriegsmarine variant, the Cap Tally or Mutzenband was threaded through a series of cotton guides which both held the tally in place, and allowed the swallow tail to be created at the rear. However, on Reichsmarine caps these cotton guides formed part of the removable top, not the cap band .
The cap band itself lacked the upper row of piping altogether, with the top edge of the band being simply hand stitched.
This example still retained three of the six split pins which held the cap firmly onto the cap band, was dirty and the leather sweatband was partially detached.
The first series of pictures seek to illustrate how it was received by me along with the construction, The second set illustrates what it looks like after a sympathetic clean and a restitch of the sweatband.
I'll post better photos when we've better light in the UK. In the meantime, I hope you like it.

Missed this on the first pass...
Excellent example and a very interesting construction (that takes a bit of working out)!
Many thanks for posting!
Best regards,
Rob
