    Hi

Alongside a "post your Imperial caps" thread a suggestion has been made about starting a thread for Weimar period caps of the Reichswehr.

I'm a big fan of these and they are by their nature the for-runners of the TR uniform cap.

They very nicely bridge the gap between the Imperial army and its traditions and the re-invention of the German army via the 1934/35 expansion that created the wehrmacht.

Anyway please feel free to post your weimar period caps. I for one would love to see them ! (here's the first one for you stoney!)

The Provisional Reichswehr 1919/20: this transitional phase saw the use of imperial uniforms and the adoption of a new type of insignia.

The cap is a 1907 field grey infantry NCO cap. It has the national cockade on the central cap band surrounded by a silver metal wreath. The state cockade is central on the crown.

This type of insignia was short lived and was replaced by anew one in late 1919.

In 1920 a new cap was adopted by the Reichswehr. Here is an example of the new style piped in the new white colour adopted for infantry and bearing the new insignia of the republic the reichsadler, in a golden oval badge.

No caps to share; but if it is of interest, here's a period studio portrait showing a Pionier wearing his black-piped service cap:

Here is the next cap in the chain...

In 1927 following several trials of new uniforms the specifications changed and the standard material moved from the wool tunic material to tricot. The cap height was
increased and the peak dimensions changed making it slightly longer and wider.

Below is a signals example for either a senior NCO or an Officer. There was still no distinction between other ranks and officers everyone still wore the black leather three piece chin strap. The only way to differentiate was to buy your own cap.

This one has a gold silk interior and white underneath to the peak as was popular with the imperial officers. the peak size is also the old measurements.
The TR "look" is becoming very evident in this piece. It came with the eagle on it but is very much earlier in manufacture than 1935. The national cockade on the capband has been put through the holes that were originally made for the Reichsadler.

    Tonights offering....

In late 1927 regulations changed to introduce the officers chincord. This was silver for officers to rank of Oberst and gold for those above. It was made from "german silver" thread and hence tarnished with age.

This is a cap I have shown before but is as close as you can get to the 1927 regs cap in terms of measurements and insignia. it is a private purchase from Robert Lubstein...

Cheers.....possibility of more to come .

This little beauty turned up on e bay last year...real interesting piece as it is a mixture of the old and new regulations. It has the pre 1927 height of approx 10 cm but the post 1927 regs peak of 4.5cm width. It has never has a chinstrap and has a cork board under the front sweatband which dates the cap to 1934. The insignia is the short lived version that lasted from 1933 to end of 1935 when the TR "bird" was officially adopted.

Final offering from me is the "transitional" cap or the reichswehr cap with TR insignia. this is a pioneer officers made by CW circa 1935.

    Hi

Just to keep the thread going, here is the addition to my Reichswehr theme I obtained earlier in the year.

It has had it's own thread but it'sworth adding here as an example of another "transitional" being made pre 1935 but used post 1935 in the new army. piping is pink for kraftfahr troops in the reichswehr but this one was used by a panzerabwehr infantry unit.

    Hi

    here's something a bit different.

It's a m1919 field cap of the cloth variety but with the peak missing giving it the appearance of a kratzchen.

It has stamps for the clothing repair unit in the 4th army corps which indicates it was issued, maybe damaged and repaired and re-issued to the JR7 by the look of things.

The Imperial cockades are later add ons IMO to allow the sale of this piece of history as a M17 universal field cap.

It is however, as with many things not what it at first seems. I am pleased that it has found a home with me and will be returned to its other reichswehr cap friends !

I have added a photo of the version with a peak for comparison.
