Let me rephrase the question. Was gun violence even a problem in Australia?

You can own deactivated automatic weapons in Australia-no longer possible to import them though (which is a Customs policy), so now the market is closed which drives up the value of any originals-people hand make replicas which sometimes include real parts and there are commercially made replicas as well-the SAS here has a couple of the M1 Thompsons as training weapons (along with other 'enemy' exotic types) but have to rely on 'captured' ammo stocks to operate them as the Commonwealth doesn't have the .45 ACP in store anymore.
The class 3 lisc is Only for dealers in full auto weapons - NOT for private ownership! There is NO lisc required for private ownership by the federal gov't. All FAs, whether operable or dewat/unserviceable were required to be registered by the 86 gun law. Anything not registered as of then can not now be registered.
Post 86 dealer samples fall in a different catagory than pre 86 DS guns also.
