Yes, the current bid is at $160 and the auction ends Monday. Well, so I guess this is a mystery? Does it look like a Commonwealth or British made gun? Is there any differences or way to tell? Thank you all for your help so far.

I have found another thread on Gun boards forum that confirms that No4 Mk1 E fields that begin with a 1 is made by Maltby. The AH is just a serial number prefix. This is British made.

Now as to whether the rifle was refurbished post war, sold to a 3rd country post war or original all matching, I can not tell from these photos

My greatest fear is that one day I will die and my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them

That is great news, if I win the auction, I will post better and more pictures. Thank you

Here is a nice example of a US imported Maltby.

I also think your potential rifle has the war time economy Mk2 sight (vs the more advanced Mk 1 and Mk 3)

Was it common to get the Mark 2 sights during the war? And is Maltby a common manufacturer? I’ve never heard of them, or seen any. Thank you
'Maltby' is the location of a Royal Ordnance Factory.

Yes. This is a common sight for them. It was a stop gap measure as they were working on a simplified version of the Mk1. The result was the Mk3 which was similar to the Mk1 but made out of stamped steel instead of machined steel of the Mk1

Mk1 rifles were all British-made. Others made in the Commonwealth nations or United States were designated Mk1*. I believe that was true of other small arms as well, like Bren guns.

That’s a fair price for a rifle that looks to be in good condition. There will be a queen’s crown stamped on the stock behind the trigger guard, to help with authenticity of the stock but it’s not in these photos. I have posted my Mk no.4 Jungle Carbine many years ago you can also view if you search my previous posts. Gotta run now, wife calling!
