I believe the L on the stock would indicate that the rifle was issued to the Luftwaffe.

You have a K98k made by J.P. Sauer and Son in 1941. Unfortunately your stock has been sanded, so the stamps in it are blurred or partially obliterated. However, I can make out a WaA37 stamp on it, which is correct for CE 41's. The stamp on the left side of the barrel shank is from a Luftwaffe repair depot (LZa), the counterpart to the Heer's repair depots, which used a variant of an HZa stamp. The LZa stamps are much less commonly encountered than HZa stamps.

Thanks for all that info Pat..so i take it thats a good thing if its less commonly encountered..shame about the stock tho..but the marks are more visible in person than the picture shows
It's definitely a good thing! Does the stock serial number match that of the rest of the rifle? I'm glad the stock is better in the flesh!
Great..all i can see is 37 on the stock..which is stamped 37 alot under the eagle mark on the rifle parts..there is a stamp that says EE in a circle next to a large 3
Dan
Do you have a photo of the EE and large 3?
