MG08/15 Collection

Article about: Hi Mark, The Mg08/15 with the shrapnel damage looks rather familiar. It is like the combat damaged one I used to own up to a few years ago. I removed the barrel and cut the barrel extensions

    Hi Mark,

Do you have the lock for this one - and has it been skeletonised if you have?

    Cheers,
    Steve

I do have a DP German lock but it is missing some parts. Unlike vickers locks German Maxim locks are really difficult to dis-assemble. Plus over the years I have seen several skl vickers locks but only 2 German DP/cut examples. Whoever sectioned it, as I do not believe it to be a factory cut did it a very long time ago. The museum that accepted it has records showing sometime between 1923 and 1928!!! When it is complete I will take some photos for the members.

This MG08 war trophy was captured during the Spring Offensive by soldiers of the 9th Battalion, 1st Division of the Australian Imperial Force. The capture date coincides with the Battle of Messines (10-11 April 2018) however it is more likely to have been captured during the Battle of Hazebrouck (12–15 April) when the Australians stopped the German advance. It is possibly the Stormtrooper variant.

It is worth noting the battle damage as it is evidence of very accurate targeting of the machine gun and its crew.

Honour Roll of the men and separate plaque for the KIA from the Lindville District. A touch of larconic Aussie humour with the gun facing the local hotel, no doubt to quell the exuberance of local drunks.

PedroC thanks for the post, really interesting but in a bit of a state! Another hundred years and only the Memorial plaque will remain.
