Brief description
The pistol is a starter and gas pistol. A aiming device or even a running lock is not available. The magazine holds six cartridges and is permanently installed. It is an all-steel version and only the trigger is made of aluminum.
The label
The model designation M.33, the serial number and the city coat of arms of Suhl are stamped on the handle underside. The logo of the company can be found on both handle scales and shows the centrally set monogram "ASS" for August Schüler from Suhl. On the left side plate are still the designations for security, Safe - Fire. There is no other label.
The handle scales
They are made of black bakelite and are two-piece, left and right with two screws each attached to the side plates with the handle.
Fire protection
There is a "fire protection plate" on the right side as hand protection, below the loading, unloading and ejection window, by means of two rivets. It is designed to prevent the hand from being injured by hot gases and flying sparks. It has been slightly enlarged compared to the Type 1
Closure or not?
At first glance, one might think that this pistol has a closure, but on closer inspection you will notice that it is a long U-shaped frame made of burnished flat steel, which extends on both sides to the front under the mouth. Here under the barrel, a block with a nose is embedded, through which the impact piece is moved backwards by the trigger. On the right side there is an opening in the frame above the handle tray, through which you can see the feeder.
The Linear Impact Piece
This U-shaped frame is called "Linear Impact Piece", because in the rear part of the impact pin is located, which is screwed in from the outside of this model and can therefore only move "linearly" with the impact piece.
The backup
It is located on the left side, to the right of the trigger and is mounted as a rotating lever. Here it occupies the space in a recess, which is located in the upper left corner of the handle. The lever points in the respective position, correspondingly horizontal to "SAFE" or perpendicular to "FIRE". These safety notices are stamped on an extension of a metal plate. It even has a spring-loaded steel ball that holds the lever in its respective position, as there are corresponding recesses in the side plate.
The functions
The fuse acts directly and only on the impact piece. Thus, the impact piece can no longer be triggered with the trigger. If the safety lever points forward in a secure position, it also intervenes in the impact piece at the same time as a thickening in a recess on the underside. At the same time, the impact piece is pushed backwards and the impact pin is pulled into the bumper and does not load on the ignition cap of an inserted cartridge. Which makes the pistol safe even in the event of a fall.
The side plates
One of them is located on both sides, form-fitting under the handle scales and reach a bit in front of the trigger to give it a guide at the same time. They are each attached to the frame with 4 screws.
The side opening
It is at the same time the loading, unloading and ejection window, wherethere is no other way for these designed pistols to feed cartridges, remove them or eject the sleeves. This may sound a bit confusing, but it's not.
Charging
It's a bit difficult, but with a little practice it's relatively easy. To do this, first secure the pistol. As a result, the impact piece is pushed back a little and the loading window is slightly enlarged. Automatically, the impact pin is also taken backwards.
Insertion of the cartridges
You have to be careful not to accidentally put them the wrong way around, because they just look like a tube from the side. It is best to hold it between the thumb and index finger, transversely to the feeder, and push it down a bit with the back end of the cartridge, with the ignition cap in front. Now you push the cartridge backwards and turn it in the longitudinal direction to the barrel and then push it completely into it. So she comes to rest on the feeder. This is quite easy, as the feeder has a depression in the longitudinal direction. This is repeated until the magazine is filled.
The Magazine
With these pistols it is permanently installed, so that you can not change it. It is by no means a new invention, as there are enough testimonies, not only for pistols but also for rifles. Z.B.: Mauser C 96 und Infanterie-Gewehr 88. However, it is designed a little differently in the structure. In the empty state, you can see the feeder.
How does it work?
A conventional removable magazine for pistols has magazine lips that hold the cartridge against pushing out through the spring-loaded feeder. These magazines don't have that! The cartridge was dimensioned in its dimensions with the internal dimensions of the "cartridge bearing" in such a way that the cartridge can be inserted quite well, or taken out and it was still well fixed in it. Above all, so that it could be ignited safely.
The room
It has another function as a cartridge store, in which the top cartridge is located. And due to the design, the cartridge is held as follows.
- to the left and up through the housing
- to the rear through the bumper, in which the impact pin is mounted by a screwed connection with the linear impact piece
- forward through the inner part of the run
- and of course from below, through another cartridge or the feeder, which is under spring pressure. What makes the hold possible in the first place
The cartridge store
Inside the "cartridge bearing", the designer has introduced a small gas deflection on the left front, so that a small part of the hot gases leads to the rear and the sleeve ejection is given.
Shooting
In the ready-to-fire position, the impact piece is released accordingly. Here, however, the impact pin is also brought forward again and comes, of course in the case of an inserted cartridge, to lie on the ignition cap.
(If the shooting is now to be interrupted, the pistol can simply be secured. Here there is still the possibility to press the trigger a few millimeters, this moves the impact bolt backwards and you push the cartridge down with your finger. Then you can release the pressure on the trigger and the impact pin comes back to the front and locks the cartridge accordingly so that it cannot slide upwards.)
The deduction
This is a trigger tensioner, it is also called DAO (Double Action Only). It is guided through two side plates and secured against falling out. It is pulled backwards with the finger of the shooting hand, at the same time the shock piece under spring pressure, the spring is located below the barrel, moved backwards. In the upper part of the trigger there is a jack that protrudes upwards by spring pressure. When the trigger is moved backwards, the impact piece, here a nose protrudes downwards, is taken along at the same time and moves towards a slope, which pushes the jack in the rear area downwards and releases the linear impact piece.
The shot
The impact piece with impact pin hits the ignition cap and thus ignites the cartridge. The resulting hot gas leaves the sleeve with an accompanying bang and swerces forward through the barrel. Due to the fine gas channel, some gas comes to the rear and gets between the cartridge sleeve and the inner wall of the case.
Ejecting
Through this process, the shot sleeve is moved to the right and the pressure of the following cartridge or finally of the feeder helps to eject the sleeve.
Automatic reloading
The deduction must first be released. Now the trigger is pulled again, here the impact piece is moved backwards again and the impact pin, which reaches into the cartridge bearing and locks a subsequent cartridge, also releases the next cartridge, which is pressed into the "cartridge bearing". Either you let the trigger slowly come forward again and there is no shot or you pull the trigger through and the shot breaks.
According to today's understanding, these pistols are semi-automatic weapons. Since after loading, after each shot, the trigger only has to be pressed once. This process can be repeated until the magazine is empty.
Unloading
Here it is best to use the fingernail, which worked well for me. If necessary, it also does a paper clip.
(To remove the cartridges, you could now also unscrew the handle scales, but this would only lead to the cartridges being pushed out by the spring pressure and coming to lie uncontrollably somewhere, the whole thing would then pass by the desired technology and would take unnecessary time. So, only open in case when something is hooked or for cleaning.)
The ammunition
The caliber is given as 8 mm Lacrimae (tears) and the ammunition was probably not made in brass until the end of the war but aluminum, as the raw materials were needed for the war machine at that time. From the beginning of the 1950s to the end of the 1960s, it was probably only made in aluminum, brass cartridges are not known here. The following versions are known:

The launcher. I am not aware of any attachments for this model that would be suitable for igniting signal stars.
