Savage Model 720 Trainer for Review
I am posting a relatively common find. Savage model 720 training shotgun. These were produced for anti aircraft training in a long barrel 28" (71.12 cm) configuration. There are some small spots of pitting from poor storage but overall condition is good. The shine on the wood was from a wipe down prior to photos but is the original finish. The proper proof marks , proper no stock markings and proper unmarked butt plate. I think the electro penned markings are likely to be Police department property markings, although not sure.
*** A good collectors note is in the proof markings. This is a relatively common gun that is often modified to a more expensive riot gun. The Savage was not produced in a trench gun. A couple of important things to look for when looking at a possible cut down trainer into a riot gun is the front sight. The attached photo is how they were and should be. More challenging to duplicate but a good gunsmith can do but never a single bead sight. The other items is the presence of the proof markings on the barrel. Training guns have (****)as shown and original riot guns had only three (***). Again it is possible to remove and cover up. A original Savage Riot gun is an elusive find and will be triple the cost of the trainers.
