Helmet M1953 - Police of Baden-Württemberg

Hi there,

since in other areas a distinction was also made between M1951 and M1953, I thought it would be good to make a corresponding distinction with the police helmets of Baden-Württemberg. So far everything has been summarized in just one topic. Not so ideal.

In addition to the M1951 from the early years of the police, M1953 helmets were also purchased from an unknown point in time, I assume from the 1960s.
In my experience, the M1953s of the Baden-Württemberg police are less common than the M1951s.

The main difference to the M1951 is the inner lining and the attachment. While the M1951 still has the simplified M1931 interior, the M1953 has the improved M1931 interior "I53" from the Schuberth works in Braunschweig.
This was fixed with a central screw at the top of the shell dome.

The M1953s purchased by the Baden-Württemberg police all have side ventilation holes. While other state police also bought helmets without ventilation holes (model from 1959).

Baden-Württemberg bought the M1953 from the companies Linnemann & Schnetzer Ahlen (LS or LSA) and the Vereinigte Deutsche Nickelwerke Schwerte (NS, VDN or VDNS) - United German Nickel Works.
All helmets originally bore the coat of arms of the state of Baden-Württemberg on the side. All are finished with smooth pine green lacquer.

I will present the two variants below.

First of all, because probably issued earlier. The variants of Linnemann and Schnetzer from Ahlen (LS).
























These steel helmets have a slightly darker finish than the VDN M1953.
On the side is the coat of arms of the state of Baden-Württemberg.




The bulges around the ventilation holes are strikingly wide.




The manufacturer and size stamp can be found on the back of the shell's neck guard.






The chin straps are attached to moveable triple-welded bails. These chin straps correspond to the model of the M35 steel helmet but of course have differences.














The I53 interior of the Schuberth works corresponds to that of the BGS helmets. One finds in the M53 helmets of the police Baden-Württemberg only I53 liner of the 3rd model, which was manufactured from the mid to late 1950s.

Here the model from the Vereinigte Deutsche Nickelwerke Schwerte (VDN) - United German Nickel Works. VDN was one of the last suppliers to supply the BGS and the police with M53 shells until the late 1980s / early 1990s.

One of the most noticeable differences between the LS and VDN shells is the location of the side vents.

The LS tend more toward the front third while those at VDN are right in the middle of the side.

Here is an unworn M53 helmet for the Baden-Württemberg police force from around 1975, manufactured by Linnemann & Schnetzer Ahlen.
The color of the helmet is slightly lighter and less shiny than the #2 helmet. The shade corresponds more to the VDN production.






















































It should also be a late or the last LS production. The helmet is very sloppy and poorly made to simplify the work processes and save costs in production.










The inner lining I53 is also the traditional late 4th model from the Schuberth works in Braunschweig.
