    Hello,

After the M1951 of the West German Federal Border Guard was presented here,

    Steelhelmet of the West-German "Bundesgrenzschutz" - "Federal Border Guard " - M 1951

I would like to introduce you to the early M1953 with the first interior I53.

This helmets were adapted from helmets used in WW2. So you can find converted M35, M40 and M42.

After the concept of the helmet 35 and the inner lining had turned out to be no longer up-to-date and safe enough, considerations were made to improve the interior equipment and at the same time the protective function of the helmet.
The weak point here has always been the holes for the pins in the dome.

In 1953, for example, the "Improved interior fittings 1931", called interior fittings 53 or I53, was developed by the company Schuberth Werke Braunschweig.

During these early conversions within the 10,000 man strong Federal Border Guard, old helmets from WW2 and the M1951 were used again.

In addition, a chinstrap mount based on the US M1 model was usually, but not always, welded on. For the conversions, eyelets made of brass were mostly used.

Other helmets retained the welded-on eyelets from the M1951. Here a helmet with the older eyelets, the M1951.

The I53 was fastened with a screw in the center of the helmet's dome. For this purpose, a plate with a thread and two brackets was welded on. The prongs are used for correct alignment and fixation.

The 3 holes for the split pins could be omitted. These pinholes were welded shut. These welds do not appear to be particularly resistant to corrosion.

There are two models of the I 53. In the early conversions, only the first or early model, which is still to be presented, was used.
The late model in another post to match the helmet.

The helmets were given a rough paint in the color black-green RAL 6012.

The quality of the early paintwork on these early conversions was not particularly good.

I do not know where these modifications were made.

After the helmets were no longer sufficient after the BGS had been increased to 20,000 men in 1953 and a corresponding replacement became necessary over time, new M53 helmets were also manufactured.

Part 2 is dedicated to this topic.

    greetings

Here in detail an early M1953 helmet. It was adapted from an M42 from WW2.

The workmanship is extremely poor and the paintwork is quite thin without a primer.

That may also have been the reason that these early conversions were discontinued very quickly after enough better conversions and newly produced M53s were available.

Here we have an early sample of Interior 53 in detail.

The early interior has a wide metal inner ring, with which the head size can be adjusted by means of a grid. This model has a two-row grid.

The inner ring is held in place by 5 springy and slightly movable clasps, starting from the central upper part. There is a rubber pad at the top.

The interior fittings 53 are fastened with an embedded screw in the upper center.
The inner lining can be exchanged quickly and easily.

The leather has no small holes in the forehead area. The holes for the cord are reinforced. The cord itself is a light round cord.

The split pins with which the leather is attached to the inner ring have large round heads.

A layer of foam was placed under the leather for padding. However, this foam is not particularly durable and crumbles completely in most helmets after all these decades. It's hard to find an early I53 with even a bit of that foam pad on it.

These interiors are stamped on the inside with D.B.P and head size. DBP = Deutsches Bundespatent - German Federal Patent.

@ruddersrangers44 The reson is, these helmets are very rare. All early stuff from Police (Bereitschaftspolizei), Bundesgrenzschutz, Bundeswehr or NVA (east German Army) is not easy to find..
