Helmets of the West-German "Bundesgrenzschutz" - "Federal Border Guard " - M 1953 - Part 3 - New production with ventilation openings
After the Federal Border Guard (BGS) was enlarged from 10,000 to 20,000 men in 1953, the existing stocks of recycled WW2 Wehrmacht helmets were no longer sufficient.
For this reason it came to the new production of M53 helmets for the BGS. New shells have been manufactured for the state police since 1951.
The first major manufacturer for the BGS was probably Linnemann & Schnetzer (LS). Early shells do not bear a maker's mark. Therefore, this is a guess based on the product features.
Decades later, the United German Nickel Works (NS, VDN or VDNS) were added as manufacturers.
The first M1953 for the BGS had a ventilation hole on the side. This was simplified further and further and finally abandoned altogether.
Otherwise, the then new and innovative interior I53 of the Schuberth works, an improved interior M1931, was installed for this helmet. For this purpose, the shell got a screw in a welded-on plate in the dome to be able to attach the liner.
Very early newly produced M53s are painted a slightly lighter black-green, comparable to the adapted M1951 and M1953. The first model of the I53 interior was installed in this.
The paint from the early M53 is only slightly roughened. Later the paint became a bit rougher/rougher.
In the years that followed, the color changed to the regular black-green RAL 6012. The interior of the 2nd and 3rd models can be found in these helmets.
All newly produced helmets had US M1 style bails welded on to attach the chin straps.
For the liners see here:

It must be noted, however, that some state police were equipped by the Federal Republic and these helmets were also used there.
