I guess based on stamps a variant of the M53 helmet without ventilation openings was made from 1959 onwards.
This eliminated another weak point in the helmet.
The ventilation of the head was sufficiently guaranteed by the interior fittings I53.

Nevertheless, the M1953 was probably produced in parallel for a certain period of time with and without a ventilation opening for the Federal Border Guard (BGS). I don't know the background. Possibly it was an attempt to wear it in the beginning.

Except for the missing ventilation openings, these helmets largely correspond to those of the M53 with openings.

Here, too, the earliest models have a slightly lighter rough finish. Later the color was black-green RAL 6012 and the paint was coarser/rougher.

Here one of the earliest M53 without vents.

It has the lighter, fine finish and the manufacturer's logo LS 59 on the neck guard, which should again stand for Linnemann & Schnetzer and the year 1959.

The inner lining is model 2 with wide metal straps, double grid but without the DBP stamp und with holes in the forehead area.

A later M1953 with the typical black-green RAL 6012 paint finish in slightly rough camouflage.
The helmet bears the Linnemann & Schnetzer logo. Manufactured in this way until around 1965.

The following variant has a rough texture in the color RAL 6012 and was produced around 1965 to 1975. Linnemann & Schnetzer is also the manufacturer here.

From 1975 onwards, the BGS, which gradually became a federal police force after the founding of the federal police, changed the color of the equipment and vehicles. This is how mint green became RAL 6029.

Many BGS helmets were overhauled and painted in the new color.

But there were also new productions in this color. The metal parts of the new I53 liner were also painted in RAL 6029 and thus form the 4th variant.

The United German Nickel Works in Schwerte (NS, VDN or VDNS) were among the last manufacturers to supply the BGS with shells. These helmets were produced in RAL 6029 and had a rough texture. The VDN helmets are available in two variants... one with a normal logo and one with an upside-down logo.

This is excellent information - and excellently presented with superb photographs - many thanks from me!

I've had a real interest in these postwar helmets for some time (I have just six) but of course they are hard going on impossible to obtain in the British Isles and without endless searching hard to find on, for example German Ebay. I'm genuinely curious, Sleepwalker, about for how long you've been collecting and researching them and where you find them. Please keep on with these very valuable posts - I'm saving them all for future reference - it is always worth remembering that nothing on the internet is absolutely permanent, even Warrelics.

now a completely overhauled helmet.

The shell is manufactured by Linnemann & Schnetzer (LS).

In 1980 the shell was completely overhauled at the Schuberth Werken Braunschweig (SW) and repainted in RAL 6029.

Interestingly, you can also find the NATO standard supply number 8470-12-173-4769 for this helmet here.

The Schuberth Werken Braunschweig (SW) also supplied the new interior. The year 1980 matches here.
The interior also has a supply number 8470-12-173-4454 in addition to the manufacturer and year.
