Hi Jack, I think this modified liner is very interesting, the period newspaper's pages used as padding is a nice bonus. Sleepwalker covered this topic of liners mimicking the steel helmet not to long ago. I cannot find that thread for now but it's there somewhere.
Meanwhile, not really like yours but interesting reading: US M1 liner in the Bundeswehr?

Hello,
this is an unauthorized conversion of a West German M1 Liner (Stahlhelm, zweiteilig) or parade liner to create a lightweight version for service. A "lookalike M1A1 helmet with I60 Liner". Its appearance was therefore adapted to the service model so that it does not attract attention. An I60 liner was installed and attached to the chin strap of the M1A1. This is not official and hardly worth collecting.
Is there really a screw at the top and can you unscrew the nut and remove the liner? Is there still a white stamp visible inside? Most likely this is a liner for the West German M1 helmet (Stahlhelm, zweiteilig).
Unfortunately, this much rarer liner for the West German M1 (Stahlhelm, zweiteilig) was destroyed.
Regards

There was never an M62 Liner in West German M1A1 helmets.
This is a I60 liner. Developed from 1959. Introduced as standard in 1961.
I60 was a manufacturer or brand name and has nothing to do with a year.
A name, based on an introduction year, was no longer used in the German armys at the beginning of the 20th century.

Thank you very much for the info Sleepwalker, I suppose I will add this liner to the "cursed" part of my collection. I have no idea why anyone would want to demolish a German M1 Liner but that's part of collecting I guess. I really appreciate the links and the correct name of the liner.
Best regards,

Hello.
the reason was quite simple. The steel helmet was heavier. Some people made a helmet like this as a relief.

Seems like everyone hates wearing a heavy helmet every day
In the Nationalist Army (ROCA), people have jokes and examples of soldiers and officers buying plastic M1 helmets to replace their steel ones in drills and exercises. Being punished after being found out by their senior officers
