Difficult to be sure. But given that the SMLE rifle was used into WW2 and after, even the Korean War, the paint is probably a late addition. Adds the character of the piece really.

I might be completely wrong but didn’t South Africa in WW2 paint helmets and some equipment in a similar colour? I’ve seen a few No. 4 Mk. 2 bayonets in a similar colour but I know these were used post war by many countries in the Middle East.
