The British did, as per the treatise of ammunition. German I'm not sure.
WW1 German I'm not sure. WW2 the manufacturing Standards were higher and the tolerances smaller, so they just used weight classes for projectiles next to well tested ballistics Charts.

Teck. Nope they were used but I cannot say to what extent. I have not got time to get an example from the collection but I suspect it was only large, ( heavy) calibre.

That bloody buddies back on the lawn at this time!

    I'm loving this discussion.
Things that go Boom! Get me Excited!!!!!
We have an expression for that, But I'll stick to the subject.

One thing I am noticing when I expand the images of what James is holding.
There is a line going around the circumference of the projectile about 1/3 of the way down from the top.
It almost makes it look like a 2 piece projectile. Is It?

    New research project!!

I am seeing this on the French 155mm projectile, But not on the German 15cm version,
Then again I am only finding relic condition projectiles for that time frame.

Thank you Gentlemen for your Knowledge and assistance with this.

    Thank you Teck,
I saw that mentioned and thought it was another name for the driving bands at the bottom.
But I just used my Wiki Fu and see what your talking about.
Great info and another learning experience on Arty projectiles
