The letter reads:

“France, 5th, 18

Dear cousin,

Well I’ve been in France some little time now, have moved several times and traveled quite a little distance. Have seen a good bit more of it than I expected to in so short a time. Have good barracks and good grub. Have a good job, but jobs are very uncertain in the army. May be moved most any day. Am checking goods in a ware-house.

They sure have queer ways here. The people wear wooden shoes, that is the poorer classes. In some districts the farmers work oxen and use ponies or (?) to come to town. Very few frame buildings, stone or brick buildings and tile roofs. Am well and feeling fine. Hope you folks are all well and would be glad to hear from any of you. Your loving cousin,

Horace B. Woodward
