WW1 Era Letter written by Soldier the day after the end of the War.

This letter was written by a Harry C. Costello. He was born on March 24th 1893. He would go on to serve in the AEF during WW1, enlisting on June 1st 1917, serving specifically in the 110th infantry Regiment within the 28th Infantry Division. The division would depart for Europe on May 3rd 1918. They would participate in multiple campaigns including: Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisne, Meuse-Argonne, Lorraine 1918. The letter reads:

“November 12th 1918

Miss Myrtle (?)

Dear Friend,

Received your letter but neglected to write, decided to do my best this evening, altho news is not very interesting this evening, but we are having it somewhat easier than we have had in the past and think it will continue and improve. All we are doing at present is eat, sleep, and the rest of the time we are hunting souvenirs or coudes(?) they are real plentiful here at present but do not think it is a disgrace in this country.

But hope we shall leave this all this side of the water as we may in the future start to sail for that part of the country. Say do you know a girl from listonburg by the name of (?) and who might be. There was a fellow here in the Co. she is writing to. He is curious to know who she is. The letters are a joke to read. Will bring this note to a close hopeing I will soon be sailing and see you, you’re people soon.

A few months later, in May of 1919, Harry’s division would return to the United States. Harry would go on to live a long life and would pass away on March 5th 1978 in Somerset, Pennsylvania.
